Japanese Extensive Reading: A Beginner's Guide

Extensive reading changes the unit of success. Instead of proving that you can decode one difficult page, you choose Japanese easy enough to keep moving through many pages. The purpose is the story, information, or experience.

The Extensive Reading Foundation emphasizes easy, varied, self-selected material. For Japanese beginners, furigana, illustrations, controlled grammar, and audio can make that possible earlier than many learners expect.

Extensive and intensive reading have different jobs

You do not need to choose one forever. Use extensive reading for volume and fluency; use intensive reading for a small passage worth examining.

A beginner selection checklist

Read the first page. If every line requires lookup, choose another text. A book that feels almost too easy may be exactly right for extensive reading.

• You understand the setting quickly
• Furigana or audio is available if needed
• Unknown words do not block the plot
• You want to turn the page

A 15-minute first session

Read for ten minutes without stopping for every unknown item. Mark no more than three words that mattered to the message. Spend five minutes checking them, then reread the relevant page.

Finish while you still want more. Volume grows from returning, not from forcing yourself through the wrong book.
