Find a comfortable starting point for reading in French.
There are currently 78 verified language editions. The reading material is in French; this guide is in English.
First, check the level system
Start with illustrated French stories from Storybooks Canada or everyday adult-literacy stories from LIDA. The French Experiment provides text with English translations and audio. Original literature from Project Gutenberg is a different reading task, not a beginner graded reader. Sample the opening before choosing.
How to choose a first read
- Open the official work page and read a few opening lines.
- If too much is unfamiliar to follow the story, try another short work.
- When you finish, add the title to your reading log. Where audio is available, try the narration on the official page.
Listed levels: Storybooks · Level 1 / Storybooks · Level 2 / Storybooks · Level 3 / Storybooks · Level 4 / Storybooks · Level 5 / LIDA · Level 1 / LIDA · Level 2 / LIDA · Level 3 / LIDA · Level 4 / LIDA · Level 5. These are the original labels, not Lamvera conversions to CEFR.
